In our society today we are plagued by juvenile crime, peaking between the hours of 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., coincidently the hours after kids are being let out of school. Between these hours are also the time when experimentation with drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and sex happen in our youth. Question: How do we stop, or help, our youth in fighting against these realities of our world? Answer: Participation in after school programs. ​
The graph above shows the decline of juvenile crime over the last 24 years from the influence of after school programs.
Even though this rate may be declining, not all schools have the opportunity to give their students the chance to partake in these types of programs after school hours, and Waco-ISD is no exception. About 11.3 million childern, 1 million in grades K-5,take care of themsleves after the school day ends.These children are given too much freedom at home for thier parents are too busy, or still at work, to pay attention and help them stay out of trouble. With the assistance of after school programs in the Waco-isd schools we can decrease our juvinile crime rate, and increase our educational statistics, improving the school district as a whole.
In the Waco area the after school programs that are available are: The YMCA afterschool care, Mission Waco, Sylvan Waco, Boys & Girls Club, Play2Learn, and a few programs in various schools. My goal for this project is to implement an afteschool program in at least eversy school in the district, or have an institution near a school that can be accessed by the surrounding families.
