SNAPSHOT OF AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS FROM A TEACHER'S PERSPECTIVE.

“Access to after-school programming is a win-win for our children: it is shown to both increase academic progress and reduce violence."
- Rahm Emanuel, Former White House Chief of Staff, U.S. House of Representatives
“A student only spends about 20 percent of their time in the classroom. We need to make sure there are consistent afterschool programs available, specifically for our middle school students in our most high-need schools.”
- Mayor Karl Dean, Nashville, TN
"Afterschool programs are a key partner in strengthening communities across the country–from keeping kids active and healthy in the hours after school to meeting the needs of underserved populations to promoting parent engagement."
- Afterschool Alliance
" The evidence supporting sports participation for young people is overwhelming...It has the power to combat everything from racism to low self-image, to the high-school drop-out rate."
- Sue Castle, Executive Producer of PBS
1. Do you have an after school program at your school? If yes, do you think it has a positive impact on the kids who participate in it? If no would you feel like an after school program would benefit your school?
-Yes, we have the YMCA after school program at our school held in the cafeteria. It does have a positive impact of students…but I say that because of the quality of young kids, directors that run the program. I have had some past experiences that we had to work on with folks, but overall it is a great program. We also offer tutoring after school to students that need help with preparation for STAAR. This is done by our teaching staff and they are paid by the hour with a focus on skills in prep for the test. Absolutely makes an impact on how they perform.
2. What kind of benefits do you think after school programs have on the kids who partake in them?
-Benefits-provides students with a safe environment instead of going home to an empty house with no supervision. Also, there are structured activities, including homework time and outside time for physical activity. The YMCA does not show movies or videos unless the weather is bad and kids can’t go out to play.
3. What sort of curriculum would you like to see an after school program implement or schedule to follow and why?
-A curriculum that allows students choices and lots of opportunities to release energy…outside time especially and encouraging some group structured games.
1. How would students benefit from partaking in after school programs?
-the child is not going home to an empty house
-time to complete homework
-supervised outside play time
-if enrichment or remediation is provided then academic growth
2. What activities or sturcture of curriculum would you like to see in the program to maximize the student's learning?
- I would reccomend a play based enrichment or remediation of acctivites, trying to get the kids active while also learning and engaging in school work. I would also reccomend focusing on their intersts and involving those extra-curricular activities into the curriculum. This will keep the kids excited to be in the program becuase they will be partaking in something they enjoy will still keeping structre and order about the program.

1. How does afterschool care help children in your school district?
- I think that when kids participate in some sort of after-school program, whether it be YMCA, tutoring, or even sports, we find in our school better school attendance, a more positive attitude towards their school work, higher aspirations for college/higher acceptance rates into college, better more focused work habits, better interpersonal skills with their peers/teachers/coaches, a decline in our drop out rates, a higher quality of homework, higher homework completion rates, which all improves our overall atmosphere at the school.
2. Do you think that when schools provide afterschool programs in the younger grades, K-6, there is a corresponding positive relationship with how your studnets in High School behave and do in their studies?
- Yes I do think there is a positive relationship from students who partook in afterschool care while they were in Elemntary school to how they perfrom now in High School. We usually see the kids that did partake in an afterschool program perform marginally better than those who did not, both in their grades and academic scoring to thier social skills as well.
